Arfiya Eri, a Uyghur member of Japan’s House of Representatives, has been appointed deputy secretary-general of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. She left her post as Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs last week.
Eri announced the appointment on X on September 25. She said she would help run the party and work to bring the views of people in Ichikawa and Urayasu, the communities she represents, into its policymaking.
Before entering politics, Eri worked at the Bank of Japan and the United Nations. She was first elected to the House of Representatives from Chiba’s 5th district in 2023.
